Cara del Indio
Just five minutes from Royal Isabela, near Highway #2, you’ll find Cara del Indio. The striking rock sculpture honors the Taíno Cacique Mabodamaca. This monumental work was created in 2000 by artisan Isaac Laboy Montezuma, designed to appear as if sculpted by Taíno hands themselves as a tribute to resilience and heritage.
Mabodamaca led local resistance against the Spanish in 1511 and is said to have leapt from a cliff rather than surrender, his memory immortalized in the surrounding limestone. The sculpture stands at a scenic roadside corner and makes a meaningful photo stop, especially at sunrise when its features glow in golden light.
