31 Best Hotels in Puerto Rico, for Flavor, Flora, and Seaside Escapes

Filled with adults-only and family-friendly properties, Puerto Rico is home to stays for all kinds of travelers.

As someone with Puerto Rican roots who returns often, I’ve come to see the island not as a single destination, but as a place that constantly reveals itself in new dimensions. One trip might lead me deep into the cloud-kissed mountains, chasing after the rush of hidden waterfalls; another, to a beach bar in the west where time slows down during golden hour. Lately, though, it’s the places I've checked into on the island that linger long in my memory.

Puerto Rico is in the midst of a hotel renaissance, where the stay is part of the story. Beyond the island’s familiar Airbnb escapes, a new wave of hotels is taking root: lush, design-led boutiques in sleepy surf towns, lovingly restored colonial mansions, and resorts reinventing themselves with native flora, Puerto Rican art, and ingredients harvested nearby. The island’s creative spirit is showing up in every detail, from oceanfront lounges to jungle-fringed spas.

With its mix of adult-only retreats and family-friendly hideaways, a visit to Puerto Rico—passport-free for US travelers—is not just easy to reach, but simply impossible to forget. From San Juan to Rincón, read on for 31 best hotels in Puerto Rico worth traveling for.

Fairmont El San Juan Hotel

$$ |  Readers' Choice Awards 2017, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025

El San Juan Hotel has one of the most dramatic lobbies on the island, with a glistening oval chandelier—the third largest of its kind in the world—shining in the center. It's a bright contrast to the intricately carved mahogany and polished marble in one of the hotel's five bars that sits directly below. Tempting though it might be to linger, the beach and four pools will call you outside. Rooms in the Grand Tower have ocean, pool, or city views, and enough space for a proper sitting area. Villas, meanwhile, are centered around a pool, with outdoor space, large bathrooms, and a complimentary breakfast. Varying levels of suites offer expanded living areas; the highest tier pulls out all the stops with a baby grand piano, private whirlpool, terraces, and more. The convenience factor doesn't hurt either, as you can't get much closer to the airport than this.

Travelers who want to be immersed in the historic center of San Juan find this fabulous boutique a polished, well-located option. It’s no surprise that this new opening comes from the same hotel group that runs the historic El Convento around the corner, with an adroit blending of old and new world design. The building dates to the 19th century, and has spent much of its history as a place where things get done, serving as a post office, a tax collector, the US Department of Agriculture and Commerce, and the Puerto Rico Department of State. Towering, wood-beamed ceilings make the 43 rooms and suites feel particularly spacious and airy. Juliet balconies, checkerboard floors, spacious showers, and small accents of color complement a pleasingly minimalist and modernist decor. The rooftop pool offers a relaxing refuge from the Old City bustle, along with a bird’s-eye view of San Juan harbor.

HOTEL
Condado Ocean Club

$$ |  Readers' Choice Awards 2019, 2020

Ocean Club is an apt moniker for this hotel, thanks to its prime slice of beachfront that hugs a decently-sized infinity pool and sun deck, and rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows that make a water-view room well worth the upgrade. The rocky shoreline isn't the best for swimming, although walking on the soft sand, watching the waves roll in, is a lovely way to start your morning. The main stretch of Condado Beach, complete with chair and umbrella service for cheap, is a five-minute walk away (just don't forget to grab a towel from the friendly hotel staff first). Take in the sunset over the Atlantic Ocean on the al fresco beachside terrace at Social restaurant, while pina-colada drinking couples around the pool sway to the measured thump of a DJ set. You might feel like you woke up in the middle of a white party in Ibiza, but it works.

This is a stylish example of why San Juan is much more than just a beach town, and with a location especially attractive to those seeking cultural immersion. Balcony suites overlook the city’s iconic Plaza Colon. The hotel is surrounded by the oldest city in the Americas and over 500 years of history. The blue-cobblestoned streets are a delight to get lost in, with a piece of history around every corner, from the forts of El Morro and San Cristobal to the bar that birthed the pina colada. Convenience and novelty are the driving forces here: Cruisers will appreciate the proximity to the Pan American Pier for bookending their stays, and conventioneers are steps away from the Centro de Convenciones Gobernador Pedro Roselló. ALOFT San Juan is in the center of Distrito T-Mobile, a glitzy new entertainment complex that includes Toro Verde Urban Park, complete with zipline; a dozen eating establishments ranging from cocina Criolla to tacos and Asian fusion; a multiplex cinema with the first Screen X technology in the Caribbean; a concert hall; and a central plaza with an eye-catching mega-screen. The hotel is also a 10-minute cab ride to Old San Juan, Condado, and Miramar. The well-known Marriott sub-brand is the first to open in the Caribbean. The 177 rooms follow the brand’s design ethic: minimal, “lofty,” and cool with pops of color, accented with art that mimics the neon jungle of Distrito. There’s a fitness center and outdoor pool on the third level; touchless technology with mobile keys, amenities upon chat request, and complimentary Wi-Fi; pets are welcomed, too.

At Condado Vanderbilt, a pink marble, Art Deco lobby sweeps you into a bygone era in Condado, the neighborhood where San Juan's elite once summered. Originally opened in 1919, the Vanderbilt was Puerto Rico’s first luxury hotel; in 1940, it also became the first on the island to have a casino (no longer). Over the years, it has welcomed luminaries and presidents like Franklin Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy, Jr. The hotel was renovated and reopened in 2014, with two additional towers. Even after its 100th anniversary, it still reigns as San Juan’s premier stay. The hotel is home to the city's best spa, and the only one on the island with a Turkish bath. Indoor and outdoor treatments span everything from basic massages to a complete Hammam ritual.

Hotel El Convento

$$ |  Readers' Choice Awards 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2025

Hotel El Convento's bright yellow Spanish Colonial structure is a true landmark in Old San Juan, right up there with the 16th-century cathedral that faces it and the forts and battlements that first established the city. El Convento's 81 tastefully refurbished rooms and suites either have views of the Old City or the San Juan Bay; those overlooking the San Juan Cathedral, among the oldest in the Western hemisphere, are especially transportive. Andalusian tile floors, modern marble bathrooms, and Juliet balconies or private terraces grace each room; mahogany furniture, louvered doors, beams, and ceiling fans nod to the hotel’s history. It's a blessed reminder that there's much more to San Juan than pina coladas on the beach. There's nowhere else in the United States where one can stay in a nearly 400-year-old building in a 500-year-old city. El Convento is perfect for those who crave an alternative to the island's resorts.

Unlike with other properties on Puerto Rico's resort-heavy north shore, Dorado Beach's emphasis is on its setting. The resort has undergone many transformations (including after Hurricane Maria in 2017), but since Laurance Rockefeller built a sanctuary here, it has been all about sea, sand, and green spaces. Rooms are bookended by beach-facing terraces and outdoor showers, and museum-quality art is scattered on tree branches. But it’s the Spa Botánico, a tropical wonderland that’s much more than the usual cluster of treatment rooms, that really sticks to Rockefeller’s approach. After visiting, you’ll remember the 95-year-old ficus at the entrance most clearly. That or the treehouse in the canopy where you had the greatest massage of your life.

FAQ:

What part of Puerto Rico is the best to stay in?

Puerto Rico may be small, but it packs a punch with its diverse landscapes and rich culture. San Juan, the iconic capital city on the island's northern coast, is a lively mix of colonial charm, modern amenities, and golden beaches—perfect for those seeking both history and nightlife. For a peaceful getaway, head southeast to Vieques, an idyllic island off the east coast famous for its wild, untouched beaches and the glowing waters of Mosquito Bay. On the southern coast, Ponce offers a taste of Puerto Rico’s cultural roots, with its neoclassical architecture, vibrant plazas, and museums. To the southwest, La Parguera in Lajas is known for its boat-town feel, mangroves, and bioluminescent waters. The western region—including Rincón (on the island’s northwest tip), Isabela, and Aguadilla—is a surfer’s paradise, with dramatic cliffs, stunning beaches, and quiet coves. Whether you’re drawn to the lively city or remote beaches, renting a car and circling the island gives you the freedom to explore Puerto Rico’s many treasures.

What all-inclusive hotels are in Puerto Rico?

While Puerto Rico isn’t as synonymous with all-inclusives as other Caribbean destinations, there are still a few standout resorts that offer a seamless, everything-included experience. While not fully all-inclusive, iconic San Juan hotels Condado Ocean Club and Caribe Hilton offer the option to book packages with curated experiences that mimic the “all-inclusive” essence. Similarly, the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar in Rio Grande, with its beachfront location and array of dining options, makes it a popular choice for those who want to unplug. There's also the St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort in Rio Grande, which features gourmet meals, world-class service, and stunning beachfront views.

Which hotels in Puerto Rico have the best ocean views?

If you're looking to wake up to nothing but blue, Puerto Rico offers a range of stunning oceanfront stays. Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve delivers unparalleled luxury with its sweeping views of the Atlantic, while Condado Vanderbilt in San Juan offers an elegant blend of city energy and mesmerizing ocean vistas. For a more secluded retreat, Royal Isabela on the northwest coast sits dramatically on cliffs, offering panoramic views of the Atlantic from nearly every angle. If you're seeking a mix of relaxation and beach access, La Concha Resort in Condado pairs beachfront access with skyline views, making it one of the best places for both city lovers and beachgoers.

How we choose the best hotels in Puerto Rico

Every hotel on this list has been selected independently by our editors and written by a Condé Nast Traveler journalist who knows the destination and has visited that property. When choosing hotels, our editors consider properties across price points that offer an authentic and insider experience of a destination, keeping design, location, service, and sustainability credentials top of mind.
